1.3 Simple Sentences
E1 - Explanation
Before beginning the examples and exercises, please watch the Explanation Video below.
A simple sentence contains a complete thought.
It has a subject (a noun), a verb, and usually an object.
It begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (.), question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!)
E2 - Examples
Simple Sentences (with Subject, Verb, Object) I am a teacher. Sumin has a cat! Roberto is a cell-phone designer for Samsung. Did you buy the milk?
Simple Sentences (with Adjectives): My wife is smart. My smart wife is a good cook. Her pizza is delicious. Do you like Hawaiian pizza? She has brown hair.
Simple Sentences (with Adverbs): My brother is really smart. I write very well. My friend walks quickly. → My friend walks amazingly quickly. Her house is beautifully decorated. Do you move more slowly in the morning?
Simple Sentences (with Adjectives): My wife is smart. My smart wife is a good cook. Her pizza is delicious. Do you like Hawaiian pizza? She has brown hair.

1.3A Find and identify the subject, verb(s), and object(s) in each of these sentences.
1. On the weekend, the campus couple decided to go to the park. 2. Susan’s dog likes to chase birds. 3. His hair is so glossy; he could be a shampoo model! 4. The professors have repeatedly told us that we needed to hand in the paper on Tuesday. 5. Faith has never been easy to practise, but remains important in my life. |

Make sure the verb agrees with your subject.
