Program Structure
English Foundations (EF)
The first course of our program prepares students to share their ideas with others in discussions, paragraphs, and a short group presentation. To help in this process, students will listen to several recorded lectures, and also read some well-structured paragraphs about various topics. Students will also read and respond to a short novel.
English Communication (EC)
The focus of this course is on academic discourse in both spoken and written forms. Students will learn and practice a wide range of discussion skills, paragraph forms, and presentation techniques. Students will also read and respond to a short novel.
English Reading & Composition (ERC)
This course extends the skills of EF and EC to the essay level. Students will learn about why and how essays are effective, read and analyze sample essays, and practice these structures and skills throughout the semester. Discussion and presentation skills are reviewed and reinforced through the course as well.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
Students can choose either the Humanities strand or the Sciences strand, and develop valuable ideas into strong and effective forms. Skills of discussion, writing, and presentation will be the main focus of the course, as students learn how to use language to change the world.
